ἀποκηρ-ύσσω , Att. ἀποκήρ-ττω ,
A.offer a thing for public sale, sell by auction, Hdt.1.194, Pl.Com. 121; “ἀ. ὅ τι ἂν ἀλφάνῃ” Eup.258:—Pass., to be sold by auction, Lys. 17.7, Luc.Pisc.23, D.Chr.66.4.
II. renounce publicly, “ἐξέστω τῷ πατρὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἀ.” Pl.Lg.928esq., cf. D.39.39, Luc.Abd.1:—Pass., to be disinherited, “ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός” Aeschin.Socr.Oxy.1608.39.
2. declare outlawed, banish: metaph., “φιλοσοφίας” Max.Tyr.32.2; “τῆς σοφίας” Philostr.VA4.30.
III. forbid by proclamation, “ἀποκεκήρυκται μὴ στρατεύειν” X.HG5.2.27, cf. Thphr.HP4.4.5.
IV. manumit by public renunciation of ownership, οἱ ἀποκαρυχθέντες ἐλεύθεροι, ἀπελεύθεροι, IG5(2).274,342a (Mantinea, i/ii A. D.).
